School of Media Studies

The School of Media Studies (SMS) conducts research, which focuses on (but not limited to) arts, culture, science, society, health, technology, history and literature. These topics are developed using media design output like animation, augmented, print, film, virtual reality, mobile application, education, web design, entertainment, video output, game development, and interactive design among others. The media design output is based from the specialization of the researcher: graphics, animation, video, or film.

The researcher employs the concepts of media theories and communication for the study. Theories to be used center on aesthetics, communication and technology. The theory on aesthetics builds the look of the visual design, while the communication theory shows how the visual will share the concepts. On the other hand, theory on technology establishes the functions of media platform in the delivery of ideas. These theories are considered vital in the study for they determine how multimedia, as interdisciplinary tool, will be used in the research.

The design method provides the detailed description of the process in developing the output of the study. In SMS study, the researcher undergoes the process of production: pre-production, production, and post-production. The pre-production phase is the initial stage where researcher conducts planning, scripting, storyboard-making etc. The production stage concerns with the actual making of the output that involves the filming, composing, developing, recording, processing into its actual shape and form, etc. Lastly, the post-production process involves editing, polishing, color grading among others.

Most of the SMS research is qualitative, but quantitative is also considered. The most common used instruments in data collections are interviews, questionnaires, surveys, checklists, documents, records, observations, oral history, focus group discussion, ethnography, journal and diary.
